Tibetan rugs, just bursting onto the American market, are
exciting rugs that are simple in design and especially conducive
to contemporary interiors and decors that require less heavily patterned
rugs. Most patterns are geometric or abstract using soft textured,
lush wool, often with silk. The wool used is derived from Himalayan
sheep, high in lanolin content due to the altitude at which the
sheep live, leaving the wool naturally stain resistant. Sometimes
a blend of Himalayan and New Zealand wool is used, producing brighter
colors and finer textures. Though most Tibetan style rugs are from
Nepal, India also weaves a similar style rug.
